The direct nickel plating process of AZ91D magnesium alloy was studied by using phosphoric acid and potassium fluoride as the pretreatment pickling formula and basic nickel carbonate as the main salt.

The results show that the Ni-P coating is homogeneous, compact and has no obvious defects. The average deposition rate is about 0.3μm /min. The microhardness value is 4.8GPa and the phosphorus content is 8.56mass%. The pickling step in the pretreatment process causes the magnesium alloy matrix to produce a rough surface, thereby improving the mechanical occlusion between the coating and the substrate, increasing the adhesion of the coating.
